Your Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day pillar (see what the Day Master is). If yours is 辛, you are a Yin Metal Day Master. Not sure? The free calculator shows it at the top of your chart.

The classical verse
The Di Tian Sui (滴天髓), the most quoted text on the ten stems, gives 辛 a verse of eight four-character lines:
辛金軟弱,溫潤而清,畏土之疊,樂水之盈,能扶社稷,能救生靈,熱則喜母,寒則喜丁。“Xin metal is soft, warm, lustrous and clear. It fears piled-up earth and delights in abundant water. It can uphold the state and can save living beings. In heat it welcomes its mother; in cold it welcomes Ding.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 天干論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
Reading the verse line by line
The commentary is careful to say Xin is not simply “jewellery”:
辛乃陰金,非珠玉之謂,特溫柔清潤耳“Xin is yin metal; it does not mean pearls and jade; it is simply warm, gentle, clear and lustrous.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 天干論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
“Fears piled-up earth; delights in abundant water.” Too much 戊 earth buries Xin; 壬 water makes it shine (“much Ren water makes it elegant”). Water is Xin’s Hurting Officer and Eating God, its outlet.
“Uphold the state; save living beings.” Allegories from the commentary: Xin protects 丙 fire by restraining water, and combines with 丙 (丙辛合, water) so that fire does not burn 甲 wood.
“In heat it welcomes its mother; in cold it welcomes Ding.” Born in summer, Xin wants 己 earth (its mother, Indirect Resource) to shield it from fire; born in deep winter, it wants 丁 fire to warm it:
生於九夏,而得己土,則能晦火而存之,生於隆冬,而得丁火,則能敵寒而養之“Born in high summer, if it gets Ji earth, the earth can dim the fire and preserve it; born in deep winter, if it gets Ding fire, the fire can resist the cold and nourish it.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 天干論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
Xin in the four seasons
- Spring: wood is strong; earth and metal support help.
- Summer: per the verse, 己 earth to protect it, and water.
- Autumn: in season; water to wash it is the classic preference.
- Winter: cold; 丁 fire to warm it, per the verse.
The ten gods for a 辛 Day Master
Every other stem in your chart takes a role relative to 辛. This is the ten gods table worked out for Xin Metal; hidden stems inside the branches (see hidden stems) use the same table.

| 乙 Yi | Yin Wood | 偏财 | Indirect Wealth |
| 丙 Bing | Yang Fire | 正官 | Direct Officer |
| 丁 Ding | Yin Fire | 七杀 | Seven Killings |
| 戊 Wu | Yang Earth | 正印 | Direct Resource |
| 己 Ji | Yin Earth | 偏印 | Indirect Resource |
| 庚 Geng | Yang Metal | 劫财 | Rob Wealth |
| 辛 Xin | Yin Metal | 比肩 | Companion |
| 壬 Ren | Yang Water | 伤官 | Hurting Officer |
| 癸 Gui | Yin Water | 食神 | Eating God |
Strong or weak?
Whether a 辛 Day Master is strong or weak depends on the whole chart, above all the month branch. Xin is in season in 申 and 酉. In the yin-backward table it is born in 子 and peaks in 申. Metal roots, and earth that is not excessive, strengthen it; fire, water and wood weaken it. The general method is on the Day Master and useful god pages.
A word on personality descriptions
Many websites give each Day Master a fixed personality. The classical texts do not work that way: the verse above describes how 辛 behaves in different seasons and next to other elements, and the same 辛 reads very differently in a summer chart and a winter chart. We give the traditional images as tradition, for cultural study, not as a description of any real person.
