Two meanings of “useful god”
The term is used in two related senses, and much confusion comes from mixing them up.
- The structural sense. In the older “structure” school (格局派), associated above all with Zi Ping Zhen Quan, the useful god is the ten god defined by the month branch — the thing that gives the chart its structure, such as Direct Officer or Eating God. The question is then whether the rest of the chart protects or damages it.
- The balancing sense. In the approach most associated with the Di Tian Sui and its commentators, the useful god is the element that brings the chart closest to balance: support for a weak Day Master, restraint or drainage for a strong one.
Most modern writers blend the two. Both start from the same place: the season of birth.
Start from the month
Classical texts agree that the month branch is where the search begins. San Ming Tong Hui says it directly:
况用神多取诸月,是月又可轻乎?“Moreover, the useful god is mostly taken from the month — how then can the month be taken lightly?”— San Ming Tong Hui 《三命通會》, 卷二 · 论年月日时. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
Yuan Hai Zi Ping ties the location of the useful god to the kind of help a person receives:
假令月令有用神,得父母力。“If the month command holds the useful god, one gains strength from one’s parents.”— Yuan Hai Zi Ping 《淵海子平》, 论月令. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
And the Di Tian Sui explains that within the month branch, the hidden stem that is “in charge” decides both the structure and the useful god (see hidden stems for the day counts):
知此則可以取格,可以取用矣“Knowing this, one can determine the structure and the useful god.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 月令論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
Support or restrain: the balancing approach
The Di Tian Sui chapter on “Substance and Function” puts the principle in one line:
道有體用,不可以一端論也,要在扶之抑之得其宜。“The Way has substance and function; it cannot be discussed from one side only. The key is to support or to restrain, each as is fitting.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 體用論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
Its commentary describes the standard case. If the month gives strong Officer, Wealth or Output, the Day Master is pressed or drained, so Resource and Companions elsewhere in the chart become the “joyful god” to use. If the month gives strong Resource or Companions, the Day Master is already strong, so Output, Wealth or Officer elsewhere are used:
提綱財官食神太旺,則取年月時上印比生助為喜神而用之。提綱印比太旺,則取年月時上食傷財官為喜神而用之,此二者,乃體用之正法也。“If the month’s Wealth, Officer or Eating God is too strong, take the Resource or Companions on the year, month or hour that generate and help, as the joyful god, and use them. If the month’s Resource or Companions are too strong, take the Output, Wealth or Officer on the year, month or hour as the joyful god, and use them. These two are the correct method of substance and function.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 體用論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
In practice this gives four broad cases for the useful god:
| Day Master is… | Because of… | Useful god is usually… |
|---|---|---|
| Weak | Too much Officer / Seven Killings | Resource (transforms the pressure into support) |
| Weak | Too much Output or Wealth | Resource or Companions |
| Strong | Too much Resource | Wealth (controls Resource) |
| Strong | Too many Companions | Officer, or Output to drain |
These are tendencies, not rules. Each chart is judged as a whole.
Balance as the ideal
The Di Tian Sui chapter on “Centre and Harmony” calls balance the ultimate principle:
能識中和之正理,而於五行之妙,有全能焉。“If one can recognise the true principle of centre and harmony, one has full command of the subtleties of the five elements.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 中和論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
Its commentary is candid that many charts of successful people are not balanced at all — a reminder that even the classical authors treated balance as an ideal for analysis rather than a guarantee of anything.
When not to balance: extreme charts
The same tradition recognises charts so lopsided that balancing them is impossible. If the Day Master is extremely strong, or extremely weak with no support at all, classical texts say the chart should go with the dominant force rather than fight it. The Di Tian Sui commentary on strength warns:
旺之極者不可損“What is prosperous to the extreme cannot be reduced.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 衰旺論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
and the chapter on “following” describes the true following chart:
日主孤弱無氣,天地人三元,絕無一毫生扶之意,財官等強甚,乃為真從也“When the Day Master is isolated and weak, without energy, and in the heavenly, earthly and human layers there is not the slightest support, while Wealth, Officer and the like are extremely strong — this is a true following.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 從化論-真. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
Deciding whether a chart is “following” is among the hardest calls in Bazi, and practitioners frequently disagree.
Seasonal adjustment: warmth and moisture
A third consideration, prominent in later texts, is climate: a chart born in deep winter is “cold” and is said to need fire to warm it; one born in high summer needs water. The Di Tian Sui has a chapter on cold and warmth:
天道有寒暖,發育萬物,人道得之,不可過也。“The way of Heaven has cold and warmth, which nurture all things; the way of humans receives them, and they must not be excessive.”— Di Tian Sui (Drops from Heaven’s Marrow) 《滴天髓》, 寒暖論. Original text: Wikisource · also on ctext.org (different edition). Translation: bazimethod.
Why our calculator does not name your useful god
Choosing a useful god requires judging strength, structure, following and climate together. Classical authors disagree about the order of those steps, and software that prints “Your useful element: Water” is applying one author’s rules — usually unstated. For now we show you the full ingredients and explain the classical reasoning, rather than present a single answer as if it were a calculation. If we add a useful-god estimate, we will publish the rules it follows and show the alternatives.
A note on Zi Ping Zhen Quan: Shen Xiaozhan’s Qing-dynasty text is the most influential source for the structural approach. We could not locate an online copy we could verify line by line, so we describe its approach but do not quote it.
Next steps
To practise, calculate a chart, identify the season from the month branch, then count the ten gods that support the Day Master (Resource, Companions) against those that drain or press it (Output, Wealth, Officer). That is the first pass every classical analysis makes. The reading guide walks through it step by step.
